Tonight my parents used the words Appliance & Car in the same sentence. They also said its irresponsible to have any kind of fun behind the wheel

do they watch TV? tell them they're only allowed to watch infotainment.
No novels either, just text books.
Going to the park? Park is for exercise only!
Listening to the radio? that better be the weather forecast buddy.

This comment of theirs was in response to me flooring the car to 25mph, and taking corners and turns swiftly. I was doing these thing safely and legally

Welcome to my life. Just get a job and buy whatever the hell you want. Then, park it down the street so they don't know. Or, wait until college. Then buy an impractical sports car and when your parents visit take them for a drive and watch them crack a never-ending smile.

I'm in college, I live at home and take the train because the dorms at the art institute suck, I have a friend from my observational drawing class that lived in the dorms for 2 weeks before she moved back home to pitkin, colorado (a small town with a population of 250 near colorado springs) she commutes to downtown denver everyday now.

If only I was. Seriously the only person in my family with any understanding of the gearhead mentality is my cousin who lives in LA. BTW, My dad is an engineer and he still doesnt get it

She commutes from the Springs to Denver every day? Those must be some shitty dorms. Buy something stylish and then say that you need it for inspiration for your art. But then you'd need two cars so you could drive a beater in the winter (or just continue taking the light rail) so the beauty doesn't rust away. fucking mag chloride.

Its a loophole in the rules of the road, and I love exploiting it

I'd probably just take RTD, Its a bitch to drive downtown
![]() 07/16/2014 at 02:49 |

It is. There are higher pursuits, and likely greater regrets. Take them to an autocross and introduce them to some of the older crowd.

Yah, now that there's that new bus station where all of the trains should be. I guess i always go downtown when theres not traffic, so I get there in like 20 min. I'm also coming from south metro/Cherry Hills, so it's somewhat close.

Fun, in and of itself is irresponsible. Instead of having fun there are many sobering activities can be performed to better ourselves and others. Fun isn't banned yet so do it while you can.
![]() 07/16/2014 at 02:52 |

Oh, and I'd take the light rail so much more often if it didn't only give me change in dollar coins. I always end up getting like 12-15 of them. so obnoxious. but I'm glad they're building it to the airport.
![]() 07/16/2014 at 02:55 |

Instead of buying a miata and taking corners like I'm Kimi Raikkonen, I'll just buy a prius and read mathematical textbooks while listening to bach. Its the responsible choice. (sarcasm)

This is why I don't talk to my mom any more. Her statement was "Cars are to get you from point a to point b. Any sedan will do, these is nothing useful with getting a 2 seat car, you will just waste money. Don't you want to be respected by society." I sure do mom, that is why I follow my dream.

Yeah, my parents view it the exact same way. It's depressing and sad. Studies show that 100% of people who dislike or lack enthusiasm for the great invention of both the automobile and the internal combustion engine are 100% more likely to be miserable in life.

Some people just ain't car people. They see it as a tool, a means of conveyance.
Was eating at a BBQ chain with my in laws and the manager came by to say hello. In the course of conversation he seemed baffled that somebody in his extended family had spent what he seemed an excssive amount of money for... wait for it... a Camaro. They're actually pretty affordable.
Some folks just ain't car people.

Ah. I drive two different ways, the fun way, and the safe way. I drive the fun way when I'm in the car by myself, commuting. The safe way is what my mom and wife sees. Therefore, deniability.
My wife actually knows all this, and she knows that I'm a pretty safe driver, and don't take unnecessary risks. My only issue is going above the speed limit at times (not too far above). But I'm always aware of my surrounds and drive accordingly.

As a 27 yr old parent I can sort of understand her position. 2 sweater cars aren't very 'practical'.
But as that same 27 yr old parent, I say get it. Not sure of your age, but I've discovered as you get older, things like bills bog you down quickly, and everything you buy has to be practical. Get the 'fun' stuff when you're younger.
Me? I'm hoping for a muscle sedan/wagon one day, :).

I'm fortunate in some ways, my mom loves sports cars but doesn't know a whole lot. She had an rx7 before I was born and said her boyfriend before my dad had a cobra and she loves to drive stick. My dad has a 350z and a GMC Sierra but doesn't own a floor jack.....

Old age is a terrible thing, believe me. Avoid aging as long as possible. Then when you do get old despite everything, buy a sports car, and if anybody uses the phrase "middle-age crisis" in your vicinity, run them over with it.

forgive my ignorance, but what is the point of a spin only or rinse+spin cycle? If your clothes are dirty, don't you want to wash them?

friend's dad famously said "cars are for going from A to B, not bloody jumping over C!!!"

The funny part is my dad is an engineer and my mom's first car was a 73 AMC hornet hatch levis edition, and both of them knows how to drive stick. Yet they still feel this way.
![]() 07/16/2014 at 15:05 |

Thats my thing. I never take unnecessary risks and I never go above the speed limit unless its to go with the flow of traffic on the highway (people in denver dont follow the speed limit at night on the highway). So sue me if I like to accelerate to the limit, and take corners sharply, Its perfectly safe and legal.
![]() 07/16/2014 at 15:09 |

It is perfectly safe and legal. They are overreacting, sounds like my mother. Did you floor it to 25 in front of them? Or were they in the car?
![]() 07/16/2014 at 15:11 |

I floored it to 25 with my dad in the car last night, He asked "why are you going so fast!?!" I laughed and said "Im going 25" This was in a newly serviced 2000 Honda Odyssey I might add.

By internet standards im old.
By old people standards im young.
which puts me in the position to say the following:
there are many things going on in north american demographics and as a result the culture that is pushing autos to be "appliance d" - to coin a term.
to be brief; there is a LARGE number of people whom are of the age where they naturally become more conservative (hence the political situation). Their tendencies are towards safety, simplicity, things and people that are reliable, and an overall blanket of fear of change/unknowns.
This group is rubbing against the echo boom (a great deal of whom are buying into the gestalt of the older generation unfortunately) but whom also are slave to their youthful outlook of experience seeking and less aversion to risk. This is not as powerful as it should be though.
The one thing that makes them different from the first boom is that they have never had the ability to really set themselves apart form their parents, the economy has pushed them into a more dependent position with their parents and as a result are becoming very cozy with their parent values as they see them as the only reason they have a roof over their heads. ( i see it as STOCKHOLM SYNDROME on a generational scale)
Throw in a media that is fueled by every small story of mayhem, death, and miscreants.
Throw in a healthy dose of the trials of living in a world where we are starting to get in each others way because of population and infrastructure.
..and we get a society that is ripe for and is asking for their lives to be simple and easy with less to be afraid of.
Corporations go where the money is, and unfortunately the older set has the money to spend, therefore we end up with those values that are attached to the consumer are echoed in the marketplace.
By the time the old have moved past any influence on the auto market, the young will have come into their peak earning years and hopefully will not have absorbed too much of those "conservative" points too deeply, but im not holding out much hope for that. (by that time they will be breeding like rabbits and getting all uptight about "the children" like their parents did)
The well has been poisoned.
The culture that this site and Jalopnik represents is destined to be marginalized - perhaps out of existence.

Ah, that's the problem I had with my mom. Simply, it's this, don't ever do it in front of them. They are parents, they are protective/overprotective. If they think you will hurt yourself somehow, they will lecture you or something similar. And trust me, those lectures aren't worth the pain. I'm 27, married, have a daughter, and I still get lectured by my mom. One time, while using facetime, I told my wife to "go suck an egg" in a very passive way. My mom wasn't too happy, -_- .
As bad as it is to say this, just have some 'fun' driving when they aren't around.

All this was after my parents found out my brother took my mom's 2010 CRV up to 117MPH on 6th ave Coming down from lookout mountain at midnight a couple weeks ago. I dont condone speeding on public roadways, there's racetracks for that, like bandimere.

My dad's an engineer and he feels about the same, more that my car should be boring cheap and reliable. My mom doesn't even own a car anymore and hasn't for years.

younger
![]() 07/16/2014 at 16:08 |

Hmm, as you can probably tell, you're parents are in protection overdrive. They probably see their kids as reckless behind the wheel. Your brother did make a bad move, and with you accelerating quickly to 25 mph, it probably didn't help the case.
Your parents sort sound like mine would in this situation, I have a younger brother as well. And I've been in similar situations, so the parental hammer is going to come on both of you.
Personally, I would try to get the parental hammer more on my brother and not me. I would show them that I am being safe behind the wheel, doing everything required, and make sure they see it happen. Its sort of manipulative, but it gets them off your back a bit. Its worked wonders for me in the past. I...I have a lot of experience in the area of over-protective parents, lol.

My parents arent just overprotective, My mom is a licensed psychotherapist
![]() 07/16/2014 at 16:54 |

Ha, to me that means the difficulty level is a bit higher, but not impossible, :).
She's still human, and human's can become emotional. Yes she can psycho-analyze you, but you're still her child so her assessment can be skewed possibly. She's still human though, and humans can make mistakes.
I'm thinking both your parents were very emotional last night. From experience, roll with the [figurative] punches, tell them they were right, you were wrong, and don't become emotional. If you get emotional, you'll make it worst. Actually, its usually best to keep quiet unless spoken to. You are already in trouble for one thing, don't make it any worst. The heat from them will eventually fade with time.
I'm sort of relieved to hear that I'm not the only one who has protective parents, :).
